March has been announced as the ‘month of water’ at the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences. On this occasion, we cordially invite you to the internal celebration of World Water Day on March 21. We would like to visit together the Laboratory of Physical Hydrodynamic Models under the supervision of Associate Professor Magdalena Mrokowska.

We are very pleased to announce that a paper by Marta Majerska, Marzena Osuch and Tomasz Wawrzyniak entitled “Long-term patterns and changes of unglaciated High Arctic stream thermal regime” has been published in “The Science of The Total Environment” journal.

The article “Stochastic Process Leading to Catalan Number Recurrence” by Mariusz Białecki from our Institute, published in the journal Mathematics, was recognized as the Most Notable Article (December 2023–February 2024) in the Mathematical Physics section and is one of ten articles listed as Most Notable Articles (December 2023–February 2024) for the entire journal Mathematics.

Alfred Wegener Institute to coordinate new EU research infrastructure project in the polar regions.

The Svalbard archipelago presents a unique and crucial platform for research on climate change and its environmental repercussions. Poland and Norway have a long history of collaboration in Svalbard research, primarily focused on cryospheric studies. However, with the growing urgency of understanding the broader impacts of climate change on the Arctic region, there’s a need to expand the scope and strengthen the existing cooperation.

The Editorial Board of “Acta Geophysica” kindly informs that as of 01.03.2024 there will be a change in the role of the editor-in-chief of “Acta Geophysica”, the flagship journal of our Institute. This role will be assumed by Prof. Michal Malinowski from the Department of Geophysical Imaging of IG PAS, who is simultaneously employed by the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK).

It is with deep regret that we inform you that on December 28, 2023, at the age of 87, Prof. Ph.D. Aleksander Guterch, an outstanding geophysicist, a long-time employee of the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences passed away.
