The Institute of Geophysics PAS has become a partner in the international research project POLOMINTS, which investigates underwater tsunamis triggered by glacier calving around Antarctica. Assoc. Prof. Oskar Głowacki from the Institute of Geophysics PAS will contribute as an expert in the project.

Professor Monika A. Kusiak, at the invitation of the Polish Embassy in Washington D.C., participated in the „Science Meets Regions/Poland Polar Science Diplomacy” conference organized on November 18th, 2024 by the Embassy and John Hopkins University (JHU) in Washington. The speakers included Prof. Monika A. Kusiak, Prof. James Bellinger of Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Roberto Delgato of the National Science Foundation and Dr. Joanna Sulich from the Polar Bears International.

From 12–15 November, our Institute hosted the annual meeting of the Geo-INQUIRE project, in which IG PAS is one of the partners. The event was held in a hybrid format, with 55 participants attending in person.

On November 19, at the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IG PAS), we celebrated the Geophysical Imaging Department Day. The meeting was opened by the Head of the Department, Prof. Mariusz Majdański, who warmly welcomed the gathered guests.

Professor Monika A. Kusiak has begun a research project with NASA, aiming to explore Earth’s origins by studying extraterrestrial materials. The prestigious Fulbright Senior Award supports her four-month residency at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

On November 8, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., a doctoral defense was held for the dissertation titled “Processing and interpretation of new and vintage multi-channel reflection seismic data offshore Poland.” The dissertation was authored by Nguyen Duy Quang, who prepared the work under the supervision of Professor Michał Malinowski from the Geophysical Imaging Department, IG PAS.

October was Doctoral Students Month at our Institute. On this occasion, on October 18th, an integration meeting took place with participation from both PhD candidates and staff members of the Institute of Geophysics PAS. This event provided an excellent opportunity to officially welcome new PhD students, establish connections, and celebrate the start of the new academic year together.

On October 17–19, 2024, Reykjavik hosted the prestigious Arctic Circle Assembly conference, attracting over 2,400 attendees and more than 700 speakers from around the globe. Among the Polish delegation were Professor Piotr Głowacki and Dr. Zuzanna Świrad from the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, who participated in discussion panels organized by the Polish Polar Consortium.

From 21–25 of October, a summer school was organized in Corinth, Greece within the Geo-INQUIRE project. The meeting was attended by employees and doctoral students of IG PAS, which is one of the project partners.
