Thanks to the Polish Consul in Houston, Andrzej Fąfara, and initiative of prof. Monika A. Kusiak and dr. Wojciech Kusiak, Fulbright Fellows had unique opportunity to meet dr Sławosz Uznański, Polish astronaut who will participate in the mission to the International Space Station in mid-2025.

The Editorial Board of the Publications of the Institute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences announce a new volume in the series In Memoriam, this time dedicated to the memory of Professor Aleksander Guterch, who passed away almost a year ago. The Eminent Scientist is recalled by his colleagues and friends.

We are very happy to announce that Assoc. Prof. Eng. Monika Kalinowska from the Department of Hydrology and Hydrodynamics IGF PAN has won a grant in the NCN OPUS 27 competition. She will be implementing a research project entitled “VEGMIX: Influence of vegetation on flow and mixing in small open channels (VEGMIX) – from lab to real world”.

On November 16th, we celebrate the International Day of Tolerance, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1995 at the initiative of UNESCO. This day is dedicated to respecting, accepting, and appreciating the diversity of cultures and traditions. According to Article I of the Declaration of Principles on Tolerance, tolerance is “harmony in diversity” – a moral duty, a foundation of peace, and a value that builds bridges between people.

The 2nd GeoPlanet – Earth and Planetary Research Centre Conference was held on 28–29 November. The meeting was kindly hosted by the Institute of Oceanology, Polish Academy of Sciences in Sopot.

On 21-22 November 2024, the ALLEA President and IG PAS Director Prof. Paweł Rowiński was pleased to visit Brussels together with the ALLEA Vice-Presidents Annette Grüters-Kieslich and Marie-Louise Nosch to engage with key European partners.

The Institute of Geophysics PAS has become a partner in the international research project POLOMINTS, which investigates underwater tsunamis triggered by glacier calving around Antarctica. Assoc. Prof. Oskar Głowacki from the Institute of Geophysics PAS will contribute as an expert in the project.

Professor Monika A. Kusiak, at the invitation of the Polish Embassy in Washington D.C., participated in the „Science Meets Regions/Poland Polar Science Diplomacy” conference organized on November 18th, 2024 by the Embassy and John Hopkins University (JHU) in Washington. The speakers included Prof. Monika A. Kusiak, Prof. James Bellinger of Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Roberto Delgato of the National Science Foundation and Dr. Joanna Sulich from the Polar Bears International.

From 12–15 November, our Institute hosted the annual meeting of the Geo-INQUIRE project, in which IG PAS is one of the partners. The event was held in a hybrid format, with 55 participants attending in person.
