Glaciers and mountains: melting water towers will aggravate global crises

The United Nations World Water Development Report 2025, published by UNESCO on behalf of UN-Water, reveals the extent to which climate disruption, biodiversity loss, and unsustainable activities are transforming mountain environments at an unprecedented rate, threatening the water resources upon which billions of people and countless ecosystems depend. There is now an urgent need for international cooperation and adaptation strategies and actions to face the unfolding crisis in our mountains and glaciers.

Optimization of Oceanic Seismic Surveys – A New Project at the Geophysical Imaging Department

The project “Optimization of Oceanic Seismic Data Acquisition to Improve Crustal-Scale Seismic Imaging Quality”, funded under the SONATA BIS 14 competition by the National Science Centre (NCN), will be carried out at the Institute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences. The main goal of the research is to develop new methods to enhance the quality of academic seismic experiments by optimizing the deployment of ocean-bottom seismometers (OBS) and applying advanced seismic imaging techniques.

Studying Glacier-Ocean Interactions in Svalbard – A New Project at the Department of Polar and Marine Research

The project “Investigating glacier-ocean interactions using the natural laboratory of Hornsund Fjord, Svalbard”, funded under the National Science Centre (NCN) competition, will be carried out at the Institute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences. The research aims to analyze calving processes, submarine melting of marine-terminating glaciers, and their impact on the ocean environment. The project will enhance our understanding of glacier disintegration mechanisms and their implications for the global climate by employing state-of-the-art measurement techniques, including underwater acoustics.

Innovative approaches to coastal protection – a new project in the Department of Hydrology and Hydrodynamics

The EcoC2S project aims to develop a holistic flood risk assessment approach. It will focus on quantifying the contribution of natural systems, such as wetlands, mangroves, and retention basins, which absorb excess water and slow its flow, as well as semi-natural infrastructure solutions that support flood protection in transitional and coastal areas. The project also involves the co-creation and further implementation of resilient pathways based on ecosystem services.
