Between August 16 and 20, the XVI International Symposium on Ecohydraulics took place in Lausanne, Switzerland. IG PAS representatives attened the event.

Thirty-two years after its first edition in Trondheim, ISE was held in Switzerland – Europe’s “water tower.” The Hydrology and Hydrodynamics Department of the Institute of Geophysics PAS was represented by Michael Nones and Yiwei Guo, who presented their contribution, participated in Master Classes and chaired sessions.

During the Remote Sensing session, Michael Nones presented the work “Decadal river temperature dynamics in a meandering river”, led by Kaveh Ghahraman and part of the NCN-funded project WARISIN (grant no. 2023/50/E/ST10/00261). This research demonstrated the possibilities of using Landsat thermal bands to depict spatial and temporal changes in water surface temperature, eventually deriving trends along and across rivers, connecting them with geomorphological characteristics.

During the last day of the conference, Yiwei Guo presented some results of her PhD work (NCN project 2021/43/O/ST10/00539) under the title “Deep learning based vegetation height estimation – case study in Italy and Poland”. The work illustrated how a combination of UAV surveys and satellite-derived data could be combined to estimate the height of vegetation developing on exposed river bars, eventually providing information to be translated into bar roughness, a key parameter for numerical modelling of flood events.

Furthermore, Michael Nones chaired the session “Real-time monitoring” and co-organised the Diversity Equity and Inclusion session, a new initiative from IAHR offering a supportive and inclusive space to strengthen the water science community and contribute to more equitable, innovative, and effective research and practice.

During the closing session, the next ISE edition was also announced, and it will take place in Warsaw in late June 2028. Institute of Geophysics PAS will co-organise the event, all details are available at https://ise2028.sggw.edu.pl/.
