In early December, a delegation of the Institute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences visited the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, where a two-day workshop entitled “Extended Full Waveform Inversion” was held on December 2-3 in Mumbai, India.

IG, PAS was represented by:

  • Prof. Ali Gholami
  • Dr. Kamal Aghazade
  • Mohammad Mahdi Sonbolestan, MSc
  • Akshay Vishwakarma, MSc

The workshop focused on recent advances in Full Waveform Inversion (FWI), a wave-based computational imaging technique that reconstructs high-resolution models of the Earth’s interior by solving a PDE-constrained optimization problem. Particular emphasis was placed on extended inversion approaches, including Lagrangian formulations, which provide a robust FWI framework capable of producing high-quality subsurface images directly from sparsely sampled surface measurements.

The event provided an excellent opportunity for in-depth scientific discussions, knowledge exchange, and further strengthening of international collaboration in the field of advanced computational geophysics.
