On September 10, we welcomed special guests at the Institute – representatives of the Arctic Council from Denmark and Greenland, as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Poland.

The meeting was titled “Polish Activity in the Arctic” and aimed to present the scientific work of the Institute’s researchers. The Chairmanship of the Arctic Council was represented by Kenneth Høegh, the Ambassador for Arctic Affairs, the Chair of the Senior Arctic Officials group, and Mathieu Parker, the Director of the Arctic Council Secretariat. On behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the meeting was attended by Piotr Rychlik, the Ambassador for Arctic and Antarctic Affairs, and Patrycja Gutowska, the Deputy Director of the Department of Science.

The meeting was opened and the guests were welcomed by Prof. Paweł Rowiński, the Director of IG PAS, followed by Prof. Rafał Junosza-Szaniawski, the Deputy Director for Scientific Affairs, who gave an overview of the Institute’s history. Prof. Mateusz Moskalik, the Head of the Department of Polar and Marine Research, delivered a presentation on the history of Polish research in the Arctic and the activities of the Polish Polar Station Hornsund on Spitsbergen.
In the last part of the meeting Dr. Zuzanna Świrad, Dr. Bartłomiej Luks, Prof. Monika A. Kusiak and Dagmara Bożek briefly presented their research projects, as well as the popular science and educational activities carried out by IG PAS.
We hope that meetings of this kind will strengthen the positive image of Polish scientists on the international stage and contribute to building broad cooperation at the state level in the Arctic.
