The birthday ceremony organized by the Institute was attended by a lot of younger (and older) coworkers, colleagues, and invited guests. It was opened by Professor Paweł Rowiński, Director of the Institute. The next speakers were Professor Bogdan Ney, Chairman of Division VII of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and Professors Jerzy Jankowski and Zbigniew Czechowski. All the speakers were emphasizing the huge contribution to science, unusual personality, great enthusiasm and creativity of Roman. They summarized the milestones of his life, from participation in Warsaw Uprising as a teenager, through all levels of scientific carrier and merits for the Institute (he was the Institute’s Director in 1970-1972); they also pointed out the great publication output, including books and monographs issued by world leading publishers, and prestigious functions in international scientific organizations. The greetings and words of appreciation were also extended by the guests from Cracow, Professors Kaja Pietsch and Stanisław Lasocki from the AGH Institute of Technology, from which Roman was awarded the Honorary Doctorate in 2004. After the official part, the Institute’s informal poet Dr. Tomek Ernst read his ingenious and witty poem written for the occasion. |
